Intensive Therapy: Breaking It Down

Intensive therapy is a way that the therapeutic experience can be diversified. There is no ‘one-size-fits-all’ when it comes to working with matters of the heart, and intensive therapy gets this. Read on to find out more about this method and see if it’s right for you!

What is Intensive Therapy?

You may have experienced it: you are in your therapy session, really starting to connect with your feelings and share in a vulnerable way when suddenly, it’s time to wrap up. Your next session is two weeks away and by then, the momentum you gathered today might be gone.  Additionally, you may have questions for your therapist, wanting more information about your nervous system, for example.  Perhaps you desired more time to process because, hey, it takes time for you to warm up. Or, maybe you were hoping to get into that new technique to work on boundaries and ran out of time.

This is where intensive therapy comes in. Known for its ability to invoke deep introspection, intensive therapy involves processing thoughts & feelings within a well-defined framework for a sustained period of time. This structure helps you get down to business with greater efficiency than a more conventional therapeutic approach. As a result, you get to address what may take months of therapy in much less time, getting you out of the therapy office and on your way to living your best life sans weekly appointments.

How do I know if it’s right for me?

While it sounds amazing (because it is), intensive therapy is not for everyone. Here are some things to consider:

1. Paying for intensive therapy. First thing to note: intensive therapy will most likely need to be paid out of pocket. Many therapists will set up payment plans or offer discounts. Check with the intensive provider to find out if they can work with your financial situation.

2. Get clear on your issue. Next, you need to be clear on what issue you are bringing to the session. If your core issue still feels somewhat murky to you, you may want to work 1:1 with a therapist for a bit to find out what ails you before you set up an intensive. You can additionally work with the intensive provider to tease out a clear goal for your intensive work if you aren’t currently working with a therapist.

3. Is your issue appropriate for intensive therapy? Finally, not all issues are appropriate for this kind of therapy. Sometimes, if we dive too deep too fast, we create more wounds that need addressing. It’s important to know how to pace the things that you want to work on, and that is where a skilled therapist comes into play and/or your intensive provider. These professionals can and should let you know if this modality is right for what you want to work on.
